![]() ABRO - American Belarusian Relief Organization Our group at Pleasant Grove is named -- The Pleasant Grove Belarusian Children Ministry. In 2009, we brought 15 children and one interpreter. Each child and the interpreter received medical, dental & eye examinations and treatment while here. We had a great summer, but were disappointed that the children from the orphanages were not allowed to come this year. Please pray with us that this will change for 2010 and we can bring them all. This year we had several new host families join our group and welcome others who may be interested. In 2006, we brought 24 children and 2 chaperones. We meet at the church on the 4th Friday of Every Month at 7:00pm. About ABRO On April, 26, 1986, the worst nuclear accident in history occurred. The radiation released from the resulting explosion and fire - 100 times more than that at Hiroshima and Nagasaki - spread widely and rapidly. No area received more than the small, east European country of Belarus. While Chernobyl has long been disappeared from headlines and newscasts, it is more than a historical footnote. Its effects continue to be recorded in the lives and bodies of the children of Belarus; children born with a partial right hand and no left arm, thyroid cancer and other conditions which families struggle with while living under the pale of this disaster. Our Mission ABRO exists to see that children living in areas contaminated with radiation from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident are assisted in finding a quality of life and hope in the future.
Summer Program Each summer ABRO works with American families willing to host children in their homes for a period of six weeks. All children receive medical, dental, and eye examinations while in the U.S. When serious medical problems are discovered, ABRO assists in finding medical treatment in Belarus and in exceptional situations, in the U.S. How to get involved There are a number of ways you an get involved. Every year we are striving to get more families involved in reaching out to these children. If you would like to be a host family or to become involved email Denise Buffkin at .
